Whitehouse Station, NJ, US, 21 Jan 00,
DOB: 1 Mar 40 My name is Gene Perla, and I'm the author of this site. The reason for creating it comes from a desire to help others and a frustration in finding easy to understand information to help me on the road to regaining my health. In September, 1998, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer (PSA 5.0, Gleason 6 [3+3]). Back-to-back oncologists recommended RP (Radical Prostatectomy, or removal of the prostate gland), or RT (Radiation Therapy), beams and/or seeds implantation. I hesitated. Thank God! For nearly three months I changed virtually nothing except trying to learn as much as I could by scouring the Web and attending local meetings. It was at one of those meetings, of the Us Too organization, that I heard a gentleman testify that he had beaten the cancer monster back with diet, exercise, and the Chinese herbal compound called PC-Spes. I was so impressed by his oratory that I immediately sought him out and offered to create a Web site for his organization. We did, and you could have checked it out at PC-Spes.com, but the company has since gone bust. Still not wanting to commit to any treatment, I began experimenting with diet. Its been an ongoing process ever since. The next major enlightenment was securing a copy of an out-of-print book called Recalled By Life by Anthony J. Sattilaro, M.D. According to the good doctor, it was by following the Macrobiotic diet that thwarted the onslaught of his prostate cancer. Reading it brought me back to my college days in Boston where I was first introduced to Macrobiotics. I didn't spend very much time with it then and moved on to eating and drinking any and everything for the next thirty plus years. Yeah, drugs too. So, by December '98 I had stopped eating meat. By mid-'99 dairy was eliminated. Toward the end of '99 I began cooking for myself. Its been a long march that still presents difficulty in attaining a sense of accomplishment. Why? Because it seems that I have to find my own way with virtually all aspects of the discipline. For example, I one day stumbled upon how to peel an onion. Stupidly simple enough but gratifyingly pleasing in that I can get the job done without crying. This or some technique must exist in a book or books somewhere, but in the few that I have there is no mention of it. The Joy Of Cooking says, "Peel the onion, leaving the tuft at the root end intact." Whoopee, now I really knew what to do. Anyway, with this Web site, I hope to help some as I learn more.
In past lives, I've been a student, musician, educator, and audio/visual designer. Currently, as an entrepreneur specializing in Internet design and hosting and computer networking, I've decided that playing and producing music gives me the most pleasure. |
